Discover the wonder of the lodging.
Chinese hibiscuses are blossoming in southern Taiwan as you follow the blazing sunshine to Nanwan. Meandering through the alleys between houses, the sea breeze blows behind you. At the foot of a hill and nearby an elementary school, you meet the concrete building with plenty of character-Nanwan PS B&B. Red hibiscuses give off a pleasant flair of southern Taiwan. When you push open the wood-framed glazed door, lively music and the aroma of coffee float in the air. Distinctive design and decorations selected by the hostesses sketch out a lifestyle of contentment. It’s time to chill and slow down your pace by lazily sinking onto the sofa or enjoying a sunbath with the blooming white frangipani tree standing in the small courtyard.
A sense of leisurely life with a distinctive character
“Come and sit wherever you’d like, the floor is comfy as well!” Entering Nanwan PS B&B, the hostess Ellen, who’s easygoing and accommodating, warmly greets you, while the other hostess Jessie is preparing welcoming sparkling drinks at the open kitchen next to the living room. This cozy lodging space is reformed from an old building and arranged by Ellen who has a design background. The ground floor has the lobby and is the space which the hostesses actually live in. It's loaded with Ellen’s collection of vintage items and her favorite decorations, such as a surfboard in the corner, an old lamp fixture from the shooting studio, photographs of the ocean, along with books and plants. These all blend into a colorful interior with a raw touch of polished concrete . An island countertop separates the living room and kitchen space, all the cooking and coffee equipment in the kitchen add a vibe of a coffee shop to a domestic feel, displaying a unique taste of the place.
“Just enjoy the idle life here!” says cheerful and witty Ellen, making a fitting footnote to the B&B. Open the wooden bar windows connecting the courtyard and savor the pleasant time along with sun-drenched greenery outside. Some of you settle on the sofa, while some of you sit on the small iron chairs and chat, all of you are charmed by the feeling of freedom.
Three rooms draw on ocean imagery in free-spirited hill breeze
After resting a bit, Ellen takes you to the Lovebirds Double Room at the back of the ground floor. The convertible wooden fence window/countertop outside the room provides you a place to enjoy some food or watch the stars. Sliding open the French doors, the mixture of red-brick and wood elements delivers a sense of warmth to the simple room, while a single green sofa by the bed offers another spot for you to sit and ponder. Ascend along the black iron spiral stairs to the second floor and enter Hill Breeze Double Room. Also bearing the free spirit of polished concrete, the room integrates wooden handcrafted furniture, red-brick elements, and decorations into its distinctive personality. Sliding open the French door to the balcony, a scene of rolling hills unfolds before your eyes. Sometimes, gray-faced buzzards can even be spotted. Indulgence Quad Room introduces a bit more lively oceanic vibes with a mural depicting lines of sunbeams and a flying seagull, along with the wood boat paddle hung on the wall. These fixtures accompany your dreams to sail to the sea for adventure.
In the evening, step onto the outdoor balcony to watch the streetscape. Let the cool breeze take your worries away; or take a seat in the backyard at the foot of the hill and have some beer with friends, exchanging delightful conversations. When the stars start to shine, the strolling kittens become sleepy and you can take a shower in the bathroom. Refresh yourself with the eco-friendly skincare products from Reise. Selected by the hostesses to gently clean your body, they also replenish your skin, bringing you into deep sweet dreams.
Savor wonderful breakfast in the restful morning rhythm
After sleeping in a little bit, you go downstairs with bleary eyes and collect your bikini drying in the backyard. Later when you step into the living room, bursts of food aroma are floating from the kitchen. Jessie, who loves cooking, is preparing breakfast, while Ellen is making pour-over coffee for the guests. On the wooden table, there are white porcelain plates loaded with fresh fruits and tasty bread and Vienna sausages, along with a cast-iron skillet of Spanish tortilla, for everyone to savor a morning of wonderfulness.
Here, the time is as unhurried as the breeze outside the window, making one just want to idle hours away. In the afternoon, take a ten-minute walk to Nanwan Beach and jump through the waves with your besties, or just stay at Nanwan PS B&B and do nothing. Hope that everyone can make a wonderful footnote to his or her holidays in southern Taiwan, just like putting a “PS” at the end of the diary.
Meet the moving story of the host.
When pushing open the glazed door of Nanwan PS B&B, the refreshing air was filled with a sense of warmth and a distinctive personality. The placid scene of life is created by the hostesses Ellen and Jessie. The two met when they were teenagers, and later one became a designer who loved surfing and carried a bright character and androgynous style, while the other became a medical laboratory scientist who loved cooking with an easygoing personality. However, fate has brought these two friends of different temperaments together. Through one delightful trip after another traveling between central Taiwan and Kenting, the duo found their common longing for life.
Teenage buddies built up a family-like bond
When we first met with the duo, Ellen was a cheerful girl wearing stylish short hair, skipping around the house just like dark sea waves and sharing stories of the B&B. And Jessie with a ponytail was cooking in the kitchen, what lied beneath her amiable demeanor was also a genuine personality. The two clicked well as a team with a family-like bond that built from the friendship in their school years.
Both grew up in Taichung, the two went to the same vocational school, but they only became close friends after Ellen decided to take some time off from school and change her major to graphic design. “Jessie worked as a part-time bartender in a pub, so she often let us in for free drinks!” The drinking buddies then turned into the travel mates. “She always accepted our invitations! She would say no at first but then ended up rushing to Kenting to watch the sunrise with us. And I even persuaded her to learn to surf with me.” Ellen recalled that, in her late teens, she loved driving with her younger brother to Kenting to play in the water. Later, as Jessie also joined the car ride, they created more wonderful memories together.
The memory of Nanwan trips led to the longing for future life
After graduation, Ellen entered the design industry while Jessie became a medical laboratory scientist. When Ellen left the design company and started to work as a freelance graphic designer, Jessie also came to help as an assistant, the two friends have been business partners for a dozen years since then. Later, they bought a house in Kenting and moved to southern Taiwan for a new life together. Living under the same roof, disputes and conflicts were unavoidable, but the duo always found a way to strike a balance.
Ellen’s love for Nanwan, Kenting, came from the travel memories in her youth and instinctive bond with the ocean in her gene. At first, she would bring her design projects with her to Kenting for a week or half a month. Then the trip became longer and longer, once she even worked in exchange for accommodation for three months. As her body gradually got used to the hot weather in the south, her soul also grew fond of the pace of life in Kenting. “I just love here!” said Ellen as she made up her mind to relocate and start a new life. And Jessie, who also loved the laid-back tempo of life there, decided to move with Ellen to southern Taiwan as well.
Riding the car heading south all the way here
The early days of moving here weren’t as smooth as they expected, some bumps even occurred in the course of designing and building the B&B. However, the duo never gave up. They continued the freelance design business while exploring the unknown hand in hand. By complementing each other, their ideal life was beginning to take shape.
In recent years, more and more tourists crowded to Kenting as a popular destination, but Ellen firmly believed: “Kenting is still beautiful and the morning in Nanwan is peaceful and charming, there are also plenty of secret spots on our shortlist.” Those were the marks left in the hearts of those who actually lived here. The coast in the memory is always there, as the car heading south has run from the teenage years to the wonderful home today, the duo would keep living each day to the fullest, believing in the possibility of meeting more and more wonders.
