The Urban Aesthetics Bring You a Daily Dose of Wonder

Riding the metro train that overlooks Taipei City, you see people walk on the streets with an ever-bustling rhythm, while old apartments and new buildings form a stark contrast in the background of urban vista. The unique charm of Taipei spreads in the air, inviting travellers to savor and enjoy a slice of its essence. In the evening, the slanting rays of sunset cast on the intersection of Songjiang and Nanjing Road, covering the buildings with shiny red scales. The delicious smells from Siping Sunshine Shopping District along with the vendors’ peddling tantalize your taste buds. The feel here is completely different from your earlier strolling at Zhongshan area where Taipei’s cultural-creative vitality tucked away in the alleys. This city always surprises you. When night falls, wouldn’t it be nice if you can just leave the crowds behind with a turn? Sitting on a top floor, Chill Roof Hotel provides you a retreat from the hustle and bustle. Here, after washing off your weariness, you may look down at the city that never sleeps with the lights of neon signs woven into a flashy dream. Once again, you are embraced by the soul of the city.

Press the 11th floor button and go up to Chill Roof

You step into an ordinary cement building, take the elevator and go up to the 11th floor. The door opens slowly with a soft yellow light flows in, while you smile at the greeting from the house-like logo. The English name of the hotel – Chill Roof – represents a rooftop space that makes people feel relaxed and chill, making you wonder what kind of laid-back space will appear behind the door of each room. Change into slippers and enter the lobby, you find that your hesitation and uneasiness just evaporate as replaced by the sweet pomelo fragrance in the air. The bright colors applied to the space are paired with the simple furniture of Nordic style. There is no hard or cold feeling often found in the business hotels; instead, you’ll only find simplicity and cosiness here. As the owl lamp on the counter catches your eyes, “That is our mascot. The homonym of the owl in Japanese is a blessing, and it symbolizes our blessings to travellers staying at Chill Roof,” says one of the hosts, Xiaomao, with a smile. His sincere words just warm up your heart.

There are ten rooms at Chill Roof, all designed by the three hosts and come with distinctive characters and charms. The one thing in common is the large space the hosts plan for travellers to enjoy their stay. The three hosts with straightforward personality – Xiaomao, Azong, and Qixin – have known each other since they were young. Decade-plus years are transformed into their long-lasting camaraderie. Now they build not only their dreams together but also the lodging that passes the warmth to travellers and unload their exhaustion.

You and I, we share the enjoyment of staying at Chill Roof

Down in the aisle decorated with the geometric pattern, room numbers are shown on the wall by the light casts through the carved iron plates on the wall, a pleasant surprise embodying the hosts’ ingenuity. Painted with large blocks of Turkish blue, fantasy blooms in the room “Lokum,” while the romantic French princess bed is tailored for girls. Imagining a “Simple Life in Northern Europe” in the such named room, you snuggle with your partner in front of the large window on the solid wood floor and promise each other to take a trip to the Nordic countries in the future. “Private House” invites travellers to feel like at home, while the colorful triangles remind you of the doodles you and your little sister drew on the wall in childhood. “Corbusier” pays homage to the architecture master with simple and stylish industrial décor. Take a ride on the Totoro bus and visit the “May’s Day” room, immersing yourself in the fragrance of tatami and the delightful fusion of Japanese and pop style. In the quaint “Library” room, a house-shaped bookshelf sits behind the bed; while you may want to bury yourself in the books, don’t forget to read the mind of your travel mate which will bring both of you closer.

If you travel as a group of four, you may find some other rooms attractive as well. “Perfect Apartment” is permeated by the ambiance of New York City with a glass revolving door cleverly designed to divide the living room and bedroom space. Childlike paintings are hung in “Bremen,” bringing you back to childhood or resembling the current memory you are creating with your children. “Manchester” is accented with British sentiment incorporating elements like the calming blue wall and a Union Jack rug. “The Berber” leads you to wander in North Africa; lying in the orange hammock by the wooden window door, your mind travels with the breeze into a foreign land. Chill Roof fills every corner with exceptional design aesthetics, making your encounter with the hotel the best memory of your journey.

Chill Roof Hotel brings you a daily dose of wonder

“Rise and shine!” When your travel mate says to you gently, you are still curled up in bed and refuse to leave the sweet dreams. A good night’s sleep leaves a refreshed smile on your face, and when you look up, the owl pendant hanging on the bedside also smiles back to you. You can’t help but wonder how thoughtful the hosts are.

Chill Roof Hotel, in the center of Taipei City, impresses you with its urban aesthetics and provides you a daily dose of wonder.

Story of the Host

Meet the moving story of the host.

With Decade-plus Camaraderie, the Trio Bonds to Fulfill Their Longings

When we arrived at Chill Roof Hotel, the sunlight poured in through the large windows behind the counter and brightens the lobby. Embraced by a whiff of fragrance, we changed into slippers and started to explore the space curiously. A wall of bookshelves was loaded with travel magazines and brochures, while the luggage deposit area was well organized. As we were wondering what kind of hosts would attend to such details and create such cosy and laid-back space, the trio of hosts – Xiaomao, Azong, and Qixin – came out from separate rooms. While walking toward us, they were still dealing with different hotel affairs. It is this effective teamwork that ensures every aspect of Chill Roof Hotel has been taken care of. Subverting the traditional stereotype of men, the trio has built Chill Roof with their aesthetic sense and perfectionist attitude, introducing travellers a hotel feels like home.

Surfing, beer, travel, and continuous friendship

As we chatted, the hosts casually sat on the sofa or lay on the floor. As long as these three fellows get together, there is endless laughter. Joking about each other is their way to show off their longtime friendship. Xiaomao is a spontaneous surfing master with slitty eyes, simple clothes and forthright laughter. Azong is the reserved one by contrast; wearing design shirt and a sincere smile, he always looks sharp. The third member is dark-skinned Qixin, who sports a goatee beard; his artistic look mixes with the meticulous character of a Virgo, gaining a balance between sense and sensibility.

Though they have different looks and outfits, their expressions reveal the same perseverance and confidence. The three friends have known each other since they were teenagers; previously classmates, then roommates, their relationship has lasted over a decade. When asked about their formula for maintaining the friendship, Xiaomao answers, “We went surfing together when we were younger. Now we don’t have the energy, so we sit and drink. Drinking bonds us together!” Recalling the ridiculous acts in the dormitory when they were in school, another burst of laughter exploded in the room. His answer is not surprising. They do look like the type of guys that would go drinking and surfing, just like the impression we get from them, frank and straightforward.

A trip to Europe inspires the idea of bringing a home-living feel to the hotel

Graduating with different college majors, the three went into different professions. After straying for a while, Xiaomao took a job in a real estate company. Originally running an online auction business, Azong switched to be an interior designer due to his strong interest in space planning. And Qixin worked as a set designer and photographer. Not long ago, Azong became the first one who got married and moved out of the men’s dormitory. But the friendship remained unchanged, from time to time, they still drank and had fun together. It was when the trio all got tipsy that they started to talk about the wild imagination about the future. “In fact, we always had this idea of starting up a business together, but got no chance to implement it.” Looking back and thinking of all the jokes and disputes, Azong still talks with a smile. The seeds buried deep inside their hearts kept growing, and finally sprouted after a trip to Europe. In Europe, the B&Bs of high quality and with an intimate sense of everyday life gave the trio a great shock and inspired them to build a lodging of their own.

“We should make travellers coming to Taipei feel like home.” As Qixin talked slowly, it was hard to ignore the determination in his tone. After returning to Taiwan, Xiaomao and Qixin renovated a daily rental suite to test the water. Xiaomao proudly showed us the photos of the suite designed with the mix of the warmth of Japanese style and a touch of the Northern European simplicity, which reminded us of the current Room No.1, “Simple Life in Northern Europe”, at Chill Roof. The suite soon became a popular lodging in a very short period of time and thus boosted their confidence. For building the hotel, the three divided the works as Qixin took charge in visual design, Azong realized the ideas in the space, while Xiaomao sought the suitable venue. Blending the boldness of boys with the attention to details, the lodging of the trio’s dream gradually took shape at the top floor.

Integrating the fun of travelling and a feel like home with perfect teamwork

“We searched all over Taipei to find this place, which was very exhausting, but we also got to know many other interesting spots.” Speaking of the process of selecting the venue, the trio shake their heads and exclaim at the same time. After some twists and turns, they eventually found the most suitable site in the lively Songjiang business district. However, the experiences of walking around Taipei and collecting the scenery from the most boisterous to the plainest, now have all become the great material to strike up a conversation with travellers. Apart from promoting Taipei to travellers, what the trio hopes the most is to bring fun and pleasant experience to the guests staying at their hotel. Therefore, from the tiles, mattresses, sofas, to the mirrors in the bathrooms, they attended to each and every detail. If they couldn’t find something to meet their standards, they just picked up the drill and hammer to make themselves. The environmentally friendly toiletries support their green concept, while the collaboration with Boven Magazine Library provides a cultural appeal. They all love travelling, but they love Taiwan more. To achieve the goal of conveying the idea of “home-living”, Qixin jokes that the process is like a gang fight. They have engaged some of the best in their professions and thus sparked off new ideas all the time. “We change constantly, and we hope to collaborate with many other people in order to show travellers the different characters of Taiwan.”

When asked about how they came up with the Chinese name of the hotel “Haode (好得)”, the trio simultaneously shout “Haode (好的, meaning “yes”)!” with the imitation of Taiwanese aboriginal accent. It turned out to be inspired by a trip to Taitung, where many aboriginals reside. Their naughty look produced a pleasant atmosphere at the scene as always. As the story of Chill Roof Hotel has not ended yet, there are still many tasks waiting to be crossed out on the dream list. Xiaomao, Azong, and Qixin, the three boyish men, with their arms around each other’s shoulders, now stride on the runway of dream with the shared mission. They used to pave the way for different tracks of life, now they build the dream together, step by step. With hearty laughter and good camaraderie, the trio stands in true-traveller shoes and invites people to feel warm and relaxed at Chill Roof Hotel.
