Discover the wonder of the lodging.

A Lovers’ Hideaway Place Embraced by Mountains and the Ocean

“As a traveler, along the coastal highway, you turn into the side road leading to Houhu No.19. Driving along the stream for a certain distance, you suddenly come upon a camphor grove which flanks and extends along the path for about a hundred paces. You notice in extreme wonder that the fragrant grass was fresh and beautiful with flowers dotted in between. After a dozen steps forward, it opens into a flood of light. A wide and level valley with houses unfolds before your eyes. There are flower fields and beautiful ponds, willows and bamboos; trails and paths intersect as ducks and dogs are running about...”

Go south along the coastal highway with the company of azure sky and ocean, then turn right into the green path to Houhu No.19. Here you will meet the Houhu Garden & Resort, the wonderland portrayed in the former paragraph adapted from Tao Yuanming’s “The Peach Blossom Spring.” On the east coast of Taiwan, now built and crafted by the later generation, the resort has vast grassland for dogs to run, flower fields and ponds for butterflies to flutter and waterfowl to rest, and private villas for lovers to enjoy their own worlds. Just forget the hustle and bustle in the city, and wander about in the happiness composed of water and mountain scenery with no worries.

Embraced by the mountains and ocean, a wonderland with sensational scenic beauty

The land of Houhu Garden & Resort covers nearly 10,000 square meters. Beams of sunlight sift through the branches of the forest, accompanied by the diverse green landscape composed of tea trees, canna lilies, and ginger lilies, which is achieved by the attentive care of the retired Wendell’s father. Red-faced Muscovy ducks, carefree cats and the dog Xiaohua, Duoduo, and Bobo, the animals either leisurely stroll around or enjoy their sunbathing, all add the lively energy to this vast resort area.

Besides the main house that Wendell’s family lives, there are four distinctive styles of villas: Green Emerald Villa for lovers nestles by the mountain and overlooks the Pacific Ocean. Moon Lake Villa, consisting of three houses, sits side by side by the lotus pond. And the two individual Mirror House Villa, the white-tone Aqua View Glass Villa situated by the foothill, along with the Green Lotus Restaurant that serves tasty meals and abundant greenery, all await you to relish the secluded wonderland with its shimmering beauty of mountain and water landscape here in Houhu forest on the east coast.

Wander along the lotus pond and revel in the peaceful holidays

Pushing open the Moon Lake Villa’s wooden door with the handle made of drifting wood, the descending stairs lead your straight to the charming lotus pond. Coupling with the distant undulating mountain ridge, with some imagination, the scene turns into one of the Monet’s masterpieces of Water Lilies. Turning into the interior, one can appreciate the beautiful lotus pond in each space. The living room on the ground floor with French window, the bedroom on the second floor next to the balcony, and the bathing pool with a large window, all face the pond. A sweet and thoughtful gesture prepared by the host is presented with the special lotus facial mask included in the toiletries, providing you with natural moisturizing care, and for you to enjoy the lotus even when applying the mask.

Mirror House Villa with exclusive terraced lotus fields view delivers another appealing flair. With the similar design of an independent entrance and two-story house like the Moon Lake Villa, Mirror House Villa is hidden behind the wooden door beside the small courtyard on the ground floor. The living room floor is a few steps lower than the ground level, with the French window connecting the living room and bedroom, for you to fully embrace the charm of the pond and lush greenery. The indoor bathing pool has large window inviting the daylight and tree shadows of the courtyard inside. As you ascend along the outdoor spiral ladder to the rooftop, the 10-meter long white infinity pool shines like a mirror, reflecting the natural landscape of the east coast and the infinite happiness of the moment.

Romantic hideaways for lovebirds with glamors of green emerald and white island

Follow the sloping path and ascend by the steps, your eyes look through the layers of red cedars and camphor woods, finally reaching the Green Emerald Villa that leans against the mountain and overlooks the ocean. Built along the contour of the hill, the villa also has an outdoor swimming pool on its scenic terrace. The infinity pool offers an astonishing view of Jiqi Beach, along with the scene of the sea merging with the sky, displaying the most glamorous stage for the moonrise at the end of the day. Inside the house, the large pieces of irregular diamond shape and exposed structural steels create a feel like a camping tent in the field. Different floor heights ingeniously separate the bathroom and bedroom in the same space. A soft queen-size bed, small sofa, LCD TV, and surround sound system, just lend an atmosphere of subtle luxury. Turn around and find the open style of two-person cypress bathing pool with skylight full of stars above, for you and your lover to share an intimate time and shower under the starry night and candlelight.

Last, you would explore the hidden gem behind the verdant fields, where you and your lover meet by the entrance next to the woods. Making a few turns, a spacious white house pops out before your eyes – the Aqua View Glass Villa, a lavish space of 231 square meters with exclusive courtyard, for you to enjoy absolute privacy and share each other’s secrets. Flanked by the French windows on two sides, a white long table sits in the living room with two lying sofas in the middle, right in front of the 60-inch TV and blu-ray home theater system. The bedroom behind the TV wall, a canopy bed ensures comfort for a good night’s sleep. Open the glass door, the right wing has a semi-outdoor bathing pool with green lawn, the two-person pool allows you to share a gorgeous bathing time. To the left, an outdoor bathing pool leans against the pond of water hyacinths, next to a white island deck for you to relax, feel the light and wind, and listen to the sound of water. Lovers would relish the ultimate experience in this white dreamland dotted with lush aquatic plants.

Accompanied by the morning light or evening wind, enjoy fresh and tasty meals with local ingredients

In the evening, come to Green Lotus Restaurant to enjoy the reserved Japanese-style dinner set: sesame sauce brings out the sweetness of tofu and the braised sea bass is tender and fresh. All the dishes are prepared for you to taste the vegetables and fruits cultivated in Houhu and local ingredients of Hualien. As the sunlight of east coast greets you through the French window in the morning, Wendell’s family also have the breakfast ready for you. You can have the Chinese rice congee or delicious Western-style breakfast in the greenery embraced by the mountains and forest. At noon, bring the lunch box to a spot of your pick for a laid-back picnic. Whether on the sun-bathed grassland, at the pavilion by the lake, or on the wood terrace overlooks the Pacific Ocean, you can savor the hearty and delicate meal while being immersed in the carefree ambience at every corner of the resort.

Houhu Garden & Resort is a wonderland where you can shake off the hustle and bustle of the city and regain your inner peace. Breathe out all of your worries like a water lily in full bloom, let your mind linger in the boundless scenic beauty, and find a piece of wonderland in your own heart, for you to carry on with life.

Story of the Host

Meet the moving story of the host.

The Wendell’s Family・The Dream Home Built by Wendell’s Family

When we first met with Wendell, he looked shy and simple with a pair of glasses. He came out of the house and directed us to park under a tree. Just getting off the car, we saw Wendell’s father busy weeding and working in the garden, and the laughter of children playing on the porch and slide was also heard. A few red-faced Muscovy ducks passed by with their butt wiggling, while the cute dogs that were lying on the grassland for sunbathing, now running toward us to greet. Sitting by the porch, we chatted with Wendell about their family life here at Houhu Garden & Resort.

Migrate to Houhu to build the dream home for the family

Originally a tribal village lived by the indigenous Amis people, Houhu got its name from the landscape that was surrounded by mountains with springs flowing out from the ground. In the early years, there were only thatched cottages with no electricity and people grew crops on the terraced fields along the hillsides. However, as the roads were built and villagers gradually moved away, the farmland was abandoned and Houhu slid into oblivion.

But Wendell’s family took the opposite way by moving into this swampy land covered by creeping vegetation. Wendell’s father, a former news correspondent who was in charge of Hualien area, before his retirement, bought a piece of land hidden in Houhu’s mountain woods to build his dream house and a resort for the family. What he didn’t expect was that the hardworking effort of building a dream home would turn into a wonderland being shared with travelers on the left shore of the Pacific Ocean.

Embrace the natural beauty and build the wonderland on the left shore of the Pacific Ocean

Choosing the slow and peaceful life pace of Hualien over the glamorous and busy city life of Taipei, Wendell also decided to return to hometown Hualien to help his father after graduating from the Department of Advertising at National Chengchi University. It was the year of 2003, the time when the boom of tourism and b&b in Taiwan started to rise in popularity, as well as the Internet grew increasingly commonplace. Wendell and his father worked together, from land grading to building the dream villa, they also started to run family-style b&b. Wendell’s father personally took care of the gardening, and they also took over the nearby desolate terraced fields, building the eco lotus ponds, and formed the first version of Houhu Garden & Resort.

“While running the b&b, we have also gained more knowledge about what our guests need, and thus we grew with the lodging together.” Having been established for more than a dozen years, the resort has been expanded as Wendell worked with designers to created distinctive styles of villas since 2006. There came the three side-by-side Moon Lake Villas, building around the lotus pond with water accessible experience and a hint of Southeast Asian charm like Bali the island. In 2009, the exquisite Green Emerald Villa, incorporating the natural landscape, was built by the mountain with a breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean, becoming the lodging for lovers to enjoy their exclusive holidays. Mirror House Villas came in 2014 and Aqua View Glass Villa in 2015, both carrying on the concept of water accessible ecology and bathing pools, welcomed and accommodated more travelers. Moreover, the neighboring old house has also been transformed into the Green Lotus Restaurant. With former chef at Hotel Royal Chiao Hsi, the restaurant offers lunch and dinner by reservation, using local ingredients of Hualien and home-grown vegetables and fruits. Not only sharing the splendid vista, but Wendell’s family also look forward to providing more comfortable holidays for the guests.

The ordinary happiness of the family living together

“The most precious thing is that we are able to gather the three generations of the family to live under the same roof,” said Wendell’s father with a content smile. On the porch, Wendell was peeling home-grown plantains with his daughter, while the two kids of his sister just came back from school. Kids ran to the slide at the other side of the porch and then jumped on the trampoline under the sun. When the setting sun shone on the sky, the kids were pestering to go for a walk, as dinner was preparing at the kitchen. This is the ordinary happiness of their daily life. Houhu Garden & Resort is not only a wonderland for traveler by the Pacific Ocean, but also the dream home for Wendell’s family building a life together.
